![]() ![]() ![]() The next step, and most important, is translating this into helpful information with regard to patient management. Test results for both types of tests are compared to normative data and a profile evolves telling us which communication skills and auditory neural function(s) are normal or abnormal for a given age. If weaknesses are identified, it is not too late to get help. These include certain disease processes such a multiple sclerosis, vascular disease, strokes, hearing injuries and tumors can cause a significant reduction in the ability to process sound. An APD evaluation uses a battery of tests to assess the integrity of the central auditory nervous system. Adults with auditory complaints (yet have normal hearing) can more frequently have known etiologies to their abnormalities. Instead, it refers to the brains inability to interpret sound correctly as it is carried through from the ear to be processed. Specific causes related to injury or disease in children are rare. ![]() Under consideration as well is the possibility of subtle structural and/or biochemical differences in the brain which may cause a more disorganized neural relay system. It can cause problems with speech understanding, attention, learning, language, and reading. We suspect delays are associated with subtle neurologic maturational delays. Duke audiologists and speech pathologists evaluate and manage auditory processing disorder (APD) - when, despite someone having normal hearing, a persons brain has difficulty processing auditory information. We do know that APD does sometimes run in families. These can be signs of both ADHD and auditory processing disorder (APD), two very different issues that sometimes can look so similar, they may be mistaken for each other and misdiagnosed.
